I remember as a kid I used to tell people I was going to save the world. I’ve come down from the clouds a bit since then, but my 35th birthday came and went and I realized that I still have some lofty goals and maybe it’s about time I get on them.
Up to this point I have been into arm chair activism at best. I’m a member of a few non-profit organizations, I give money to various charities, sign petitions as I see fit, write letters to the local newspaper editor when I get swept up in a local issue, and I do my part at home. But I don’t feel like any of my actions or contributions have made a big impact on society. To do so would require moving out of my comfort zone, which of course is, well, uncomfortable. But the time has come! (Signal patriotic music). Now I’m going to celebrate what I can do, instead of just cheering on those other go-getters who I’ve admired from afar but never considered the possibility that I could do something like them.
So this goal I have is my big idea, my big, yet small contribution to society. I am launching “The Book Project” tomorrow. It’s going to depict the benefits of breastfeeding and the importance of positive portrayal of breastfeeding in public and the media. It will be dedicated to all the women who breastfeed in the public eye and in doing so inspire other women to do the same. Nursing in public can make all the difference. It did for me, and now here I am, 35 years old and ready to give back.
