Here is a recipe for oatmeal that will knock your socks off! Forget apples and cinnamon, forget raisins and brown sugar, forget mashed bananas with maple syrup and milk, although that does sound good… It requires a little more effort than other oatmeal recipes but I know you will love it. No, no, don’t shirk away from the word effort! This cold weather breakfast just may make the rest of your winter much brighter. Yes, it really is that good! My friend Maria used to make this all the time when we were roommates. She told me it has a secret name so I am calling it “Maria’s Secret Oatmeal.”
Here it is:
Maria’s Secret Oatmeal
~by Maria Salix~
Total Time to Prepare and Cook: 35 minutes
Before you begin, place 3 cups of water in a kettle to boil.
CRUSH: in a mortar and pestle or coffee grinder
1/8 tsp cumin seed
1/8 tsp coriander seed
1/8 tsp cardamom seed
6 peppercorns
HEAT: on med-high:
1 Tbsp oil or ghee
ADD:
Crushed spices
Pinch of tumeric
1 large bay leaf
1 cinnamon stick
SAUTEE and STIR until aromatic.
ADD:
1 cup steel cut oats (whole oats work too)
STIR until nutty.
COVER: with 3 cups of hot water.
It will boil right away so be careful. Turn down the heat to low-med. Cook for 15-25 minutes depending on how chewy you like your cereal. Check on it after 10-15 minutes to see if it needs more water. I like it dry but cooked through whereas others like it wet but crunchy.
GARNISH with any of the following:
nutritional yeast, seeds, nuts, gomashio, kelp powder, sea salt
Serves 2-4
I have served this to my 1 and 4 year olds and they like it too, especially with the salty gomashio and engevita yeast. Click on hyperlink for how to make your own gomashio.

[...] Maria’s Secret Oatmeal has at least two super foods: oats and sunflower seeds, with the option of adding more nuts and seeds like flax or almonds. It has roasted crushed spices that makes this a very special savory breakfast recipe. Although this contains the least of the super foods, I highly recommend it anyway. [...]
