Cyclone Dairy: Perfect Cows. Perfect Milk. Milk from cloned cows.
When I first stumbled upon an ad for the company called Cyclone Dairy I seriously thought it was a joke. Sorry dairy folk, but I did. When I started looking over their website I realized that the punch line that I was looking for was missing.
I don’t know about you but the thought of consuming a product of a cloned animal, regardless of how well its made and its “safety,” makes me queasy. And really, can’t cloned cows become the victim of disease just like other cows? Can humans really control for every malady that befalls a farm industry animal? Aside from that what happened to ethics? If this is acceptable then how many steps are we away from openly cloning humans? And for what reasons would we do this? How about science?
Here is where my musing comes in: If “perfect” cloned cow milk is “best”, and we already know “breast is best” then how long will it be before scientists find a way to clone human breast milk? Or this just some crazy thought right out of a science-fiction novel? I don’t think we’re at the stage where they would clone a perfectly healthy woman over and over again for the purpose of pumping her breast milk to replace formula. The breach of ethics is unfathomable. But I bet some scientists are working on it, or at least would like to, and this totally freaks me out. But on the other side of the coin, just think of the benefits to babies whose moms might otherwise feed them formula! Some moms might just choose to feed them that cloned breastmilk over their own. We all want the “best” for our kids so why not? Oh, the slippery slope! I hope this never ever happens. but when I saw that ad for cloned cow milk, you can’t blame me for wondering.
What do you think of cloned cow milk? Would you drink it? Do you think cloned breast milk will ever be in our future? All comments are welcome and appreciated. And if you liked this post please consider subscribing by RSS or email. It would make my day!

Honestly after breastfeeding and knowing how everything I eat, drink, ect ends up in MY milk, I really struggle with drinking and giving my children cow’s milk. So cloned cow’s milk would be out of the question 100% I certainly hope that it would never get to the point of cloned breast milk. *shudders at the thought*

Hmm. After looking at that website and its “cloning” process, that doesn’t look like cloning to me. It looks like selective test-tube breeding. Unless I’m completely clueless and that’s what cloning is? Whatever. It’s genetically modified, whatever it is, so no thanks.

Um yeah. Cloned/GMO milk? NO THANKS! We consume only organic dairy products in my house – and most other foods are organic, too. I don’t think I would ever knowingly consume a GMO/cloned item.

I think that messing with genes is a slippery slope. One of the strengths of the way humans and cows reproduce is the diversity. Once you lose that, you’re at risk for all sorts of problems. So no, I wouldn’t drink the milk.
I think it’s unlikely we’ll see cloned breast milk, exactly. But it wouldn’t surprise me to see genetically engineered animals bred to produce different milk. Say, milk that lactose intolerant people can drink. Or milk that’s meant to be closer to human milk, to make ‘better’ formula. Again, I wouldn’t buy it, but it’s not that much of a leap from the current genetic engineering we’re doing, or the special feeds we give to get ‘better’ sheep or ‘better’ eggs.

I love the FAQ answer to “Are there any ethical issues about cloning?” Answer:No. WTF?!!!!
It is only one upped by the following promise to start producing baby formula from cloned cows milk. Mmmm, tasty!
I wonder if this isn’t a joke…. A bad one!
Yikes! No thanks!

I will officially come out and say that I really think this is a joke. Some kind of viral marketing for something else entirely, like organic free-range soy yogurt or something. What really convinced me that this isn’t for real is the FAQ that the previous commenter mentioned about the ethical issues of cloning. Even people who are involved in cloning agree there are ethical issues surrounding it, for goodness sake.
