[...] Childhood is short. I think it is a parent’s job to keep their child innocent of some things and to be able to say “no” when their child shows interest in something too old for his or her development. It’s our responsibility as grown ups to monitor the kinds of television shows they watch, the computer games they play, and the kinds of toys and clothes that they want us to buy. And it’s our responsibility to encourage our children’s sense of wonder, imagination, and free play. [...]

[...] The school is also surrounded by farmland and forest, not shops and highways - a lovely rural school setting. I went to two different elementary schools, which both backed on to forest and trails. I have the fondest memories of running through the woods and along a stream bank, making forts under the big trees and exploring inside rotting stumps. These days such school properties would be fenced to keep predators out. And this school is fenced too. But my daughter will have a lot of fun walking there at least. I wrote about the games my kids play on our neighbourhood walks here. [...]

I am extremely lax about my kids getting dirty. I would rather risk exposing them to some grime and a few germs than a lot of potentially toxic toys and cleaning agents. Or have them stuck inside in front of the TV. Plus, because I breastfeed I know that they have great protection against the ordinary germs they come into contact with on their travels.

Amber’s last blog post..You Are Your Child’s First Teacher

I wanted to let you know that I have been reading along with your blog for awhile now and really enjoy these somewhat off topic posts (although I love all the breastfeeding posts too). Thanks for validating my kids need for dirt!
