I was so excited to discover Momzelle Nursing Wear. As soon as you get on the site you can tell you are dealing with a proudly ethical and green company that is not only dedicated to breastfeeding support and education, but environmental awareness and education as well, which are two issues very close to my own heart. As such, I am pleased to make this review my official Earth Day post. To read my other Earth Day post, go here.
Not only does the company go out of its way to provide tons of breastfeeding information and resources to women on their website, they also educate you about organic and sustainable farming practices. I don’t think I know any other retail companies that do that.
Christine Poirier started Momzelle Nursing Wear after having her first child and designing her own nursing top in order to feel comfortable nursing in public. Friends loved it and asked her to make one for them too. Since she loved to sew and was getting rave reviews she decided to go into business. Her brother Vincent became her business partner. The name Momzelle was derived from a play on the word ”Moms” and the French word ”Madamoiselle,” meaning young woman. The words together came to represent the young woman who becomes a mother, Momzelle.
Momzelle Nursing Wear is made from 100% organic cotton (92% organic cotton and 8% spandex). Their tops are made in Canada and sourced from a certified organic farm in the United States. When I received mine, immediately I could see and feel the high quality. The material is thick and feels durable. I think it will hold up well to the yanks of a growing nursling. I ordered the long organic tank top, specifically made for women over 5’8″. I am 6ft tall so appreciate that they even make a shirt for taller women. However, all of their shirts are designed to be longer through the body, so it is likely I could comfortably wear one of their regular shirts too. They also flatter the postpartum figure. When you put it on you can feel the gentle hug around your tummy, and it does help hide that deflated basketball tummy most women get after birth, and for me, those mommy rolls that sometimes stick around longer than you want them to! As well, my tank top totally hides my bra strap, which I am not used to a tank top doing. They say their shirts are sleek and comfortable and if I hadn’t read it on their site that’s exactly how I would have described them anyway! Mine fits me like a glove!
Momzelle’s mission statement is to help other women achieve a positive breastfeeding experience and feel confident and comfortable breastfeeding anywhere. Part of their slogan is “We’ve got your belly covered.” This is interesting for me because of one of my past posts, Monday Musings: Do Public Breastfeeding Moms Nurse Longer? that resulted in the Poll: How Long Did You Breastfeed? (Covering Up vs. Not Covering Up) had a number of women asking me if I thought nursing tops counted as covering up. For the sake of the poll, I said they didn’t because they were already a part of one’s attire. I consider covering up to be taking an accessory blanket or cover and covering up the baby’s head and your breast area so the people around you can’t see the act of breastfeeding. What is perfect about Momzelle nursing wear is that you don’t have to worry one iota about the hassles of a nursing cover because Momzelle shirts make it so easy to be discreet. Those who don’t worry too much about the modesty factor will appreciate their bellies being protected from the elements.
I tried nursing wear in the early days with my firstborn and had bad experiences with the shirt and pajama top I owned. What I realize now is that the quality and workmanship was poor. The breastfeeding slots didn’t stay in the right place, the material got stretched out of proportion and because I am tall, the regular shirts were made to fit shorter moms, so my belly was always exposed. With Momzelle shirts being made longer than regular tops to start with and the added bonus of providing long shirts to tall women make them the best nursing wear company I have ever seen or heard about. And after a couple of washings and many yankings my tank top is still like new.
Momzelle nursing wear prices are quite reasonable when you consider the organic fabric and the high quality ethical workmanship that go into these shirts. American customers also need to remember that Momzelle prices are in Canadian dollars. In addition, Momzelle has an excellent no hassle return policy and low shipping rates for internet orders. As well, some stores in Canada and the USA actually carry their shirts, and you can find these on their website. They come in a satisfactory range of styles and colours ensuring your seasonal shirt needs are met. I highly recommend this company, not only for their line of nursing wear but their ethical and inspiring practices as a company.
Christine also has her own bilingual breastfeeding blog you should check out. www.momzelle.wordpress.com. In fact, to get you started, if you want to see some very cool breastfeeding and birthing dolls that she found, go here.
Happy Earth Day everyone! To celebrate why not consider treating yourself to a 100% cotton Momzelle nursing shirt for the Spring or Summer? You’ll be glad you did. Below is a photo of me in my Momzelle organic long tank in khaki and my 24 month old nursling.

I absolutely LOVE the discreetness of the tops! I have breastfed all of my babies, and always get so frustrated in the early nursing stages in public. The baby has a hard time latching on and here you are struggling with a blanket and a baby who is hungry. Talk about embarrassing! I can’t count how many times the blanket has fallen, and here I am exposed to the whole grocery store! I might have to try a few of these out with our new baby! Thanks for the review.

[...] 3. At least one nursing shirt. Before I received a Momzelle nursing shirt I didn’t think it was such a big deal to own nursing wear. And yes, I got by fine without one. But now that I have one I wear it all the time. For me it’s about keeping my belly covered more than it is about not exposing my breast, but sometimes nursing wear can be essential in helping moms feel confident about nursing in public. If you don’t go with Momzelle, just make sure you choose something made under high quality standards. To read my review of the Momzelle organic cotton long tank top, you can go here. [...]
