It has been two years since modern day wet nursing hit the media, on The Today Show (see below) and in Time Magazine. Since I was trying to recuperate from just having a baby I wasn’t spending much time on the computer back then, so when I decided to do a series of wet nursing/cross nursing posts, I had no idea it had already created a sensation in the media world. So for those of you, who either weren’t moms yet or missed the hoopla like me, this video is for you. It’s a nice lead into tomorrow’s post too.

Elita from Blacktating recently interviewed the writer Erica Eisdorfer, who has just finished writing a novel called The Wet Nurse’s Tale. It sounds like a terrific upcoming read and since I have always been intrigued by wet nursing I know I’ll be going out and getting it when it’s released. Go and check out Elita’s site to read the interview.
Of course, many of us heard about and saw CNN’s recent video of Salma Hayek nursing another woman’s baby while visiting Sierra Leone in Africa. Some have likened her to the Chinese police officer who “heroically” breastfed orphaned babies after the May 12, 2008 Sechuan earthquake. I know there are still a number of people who have not yet seen this video, so here it is. It’s a great watch.

What a great video clip. My admiration for Salma has just skyrocketed. If nothing else, that was a sensational way to draw attention to the importance of breastfeeding, especially in underdeveloped countries.
I have often joked that I would have made a great wet nurse, due largely to the fact that I have an abundant milk supply. I have breastfed several of my friends babies for different reason. One mother was having low milk problem and her baby was frantic, another had run out of formula and baby was hungry, another mom was shopping and I was babysitting, another had troubles with her latch and we could figure out the problem so I put the baby to my breast to “feel” the latch. I’ve had moms breastfeed my children as well. I see no problem with it so long as there’s consent. I’d much rather wet nurse for a baby than to see it go hungry and cry, or receive formula when a human milk option is available. I’m reminded of the statement “formula is not the second best choice for babies. It’s the 5th best. 1st – moms milk at breast, 2nd – moms milk in bottle, 3rd – another moms milk at breast, 4th – another moms milk in bottle, 5th – formula.”
Wow! Great statement by the previous poster! I wish I had the guts to share breastfeeding like that!
I love that video … I’ve tried to watch it a number of times on other blogs and it hasn’t worked, so I am happy I finally got to see it!
