If you are a pregnant or new mom who is planning on breastfeeding, you need to get the My Baby Experts Simply Breastfeeding DVD! Not every town offers new parents breastfeeding classes. So this is a great way to get get ready for your new baby and get proactive in increasing your knowledge of breastfeeding in the comfort of your own home, with your spouse or partner by your side. Even if your prenatal class does offer good breastfeeding information, having this video to review whenever you need it is excellent value. The DVD set you order also comes with a handbook.
Shari Crisco, an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant and Nurse Midwife and your teacher in the film, puts it like this: The difference between pregnancy and breastfeeding is like the difference between the wedding and the marriage. You put so much energy into the wedding, and then when the day somes you feel relieved that it is finally over, only really, it is just the beginning! Now you need to figure out the marriage part. Having a baby is the same thing.
I could totally relate to that comparison because I spent my whole pregnancy pouring over books and planning the perfect birth. My biggest regret after my first daughter was born was that I didn’t put enough time and energy into preparing for motherhood and breastfeeding. Even though I had minimal problems with breastfeeding – I had cracked and bloody nipples due to an improper latch that I thought was fine – I assumed these things just came along with the breastfeeding territory – I wish I had known more about the benefits of breastfeeding beforehand. Because if I wasn’t already sold on breastfeeding and if I had had anymore problems than I did, I don’t know if I would have continued. It might have been easier to stop.
And this is why I love Shari Crisco’s video! Because she spends the first half of the video selling you on breastfeeding, so you enter your breastfeeding relationship with your baby with a commitment to it, no matter what! Like she says in the video, 98% of your success is your commitment (and your partner’s commitment to supporting it). You finish watching the video, more informed than most people are about breastfeeding.
Of course she covers the benefits of breastfeeding, for baby and mom, and emphasizes the importance of dad’s role in the breastfeeding relationship, which is really cool and really is important to successful breastfeeding. She also covers a number of the myths and misunderstanding our culture has with breastfeeding. Things like why worrying about infant weight loss in the early days is overrated, how much your newborn should really be getting in the first few weeks, what kinds of things affect mom’s milk supply and why your nipples shouldn’t hurt when you breastfeed and what to do if they do. I found myself nodding my head in agreement to many things she said that I was so glad she shared with her class, and I even learned a few things! Me, a seasoned breastfeeding mom who’s been breastfeeding for almost 5 years non-stop and writes a blog about the topic!
The second half of the DVD shows you how to breastfeed. Also handy, especially if you have never seen anyone breastfeed close up before. And not many new moms have. I appreciated the visual learning that comes with watching this well produced video. My husband suggested I mention the excellent production values too because once upon a time he was a Film Studies major, and he likes to put his education to use once in awhile.
Criticisms? There are no people of colour in the video. She also doesn’t touch on why hospital personnel get new moms to supplement. I wish this information was more readily to available to moms who struggle with the inconsistent messages they recieve from hospital personnel, LC’s, doulas, midwives, friends and family. But I think it is difficult for professionals to call out their collegues. Fair enough. I do agree it is important to maintain one’s prefessional integrity. I also would have liked to see her mention the the breastfeeding recommendations from World Health Organization (WHO) who advise mothers to breastfeed exclusively for the first 6 months and then up to two years and beyond while the American Pediatric Association’s (APA) only recommend breastfeeding for up to a year and beyond.
If you want to learn how to be a successful breastfeeding mom and gain enough knowledge about breastfeeding that you will essentially be able to help other women feel confident and committed to breastfeeding too, then I urge you to buy this DVD set. And if you order it through my site I will get a commission. Yep! I signed up to be an affiliate because I really do believe that this is an exceptional product for new moms who want to breastfeed.
I don’t do many product reviews because I am a pretty picky woman, but those I do you can count on my full support of the product. I fully endorse My Baby Experts Simply Breastfeeding DVD. Buy it for yourself or go in on it with a friend so both of you can benefit from it for less, or buy it for expecting parents you know. You won’t be disappointed.

Ooh ooh! I need to win it! We just figured out that my daughter wasn’t getting enough breastmilk. Now that it’s fixed, she’s sucking the skin right off my nipples, so we need to re-learn how this works. Great blog by the way. Tons of information to read!

I love breastfeeding. I would love to have these to donate to my local LLL. I nursed my daughter to age 28 months when age self weaned and am currently nursing my 13 month old son.
I always love to keep on nursing info, & I also love the stories that fellow nursing mamas share…. I had no support nursing my first child, my own sister & best friend told me that if I was still nursing my son when he turned two, they were going to have an intervention! I am proud to say that he nursed until he was 2 1/2, & I was 7 months pregnant with my second… To have more facts & collective stories all together would be a great gift to pass along to those who need it most! I am successfully nursing my now 4 month old, & love promoting nursing to new moms & friends that are expecting…. it blows me away what little knowledge we have had available until recently ~ Thanks Melodie ~ your dedication is appreciated!
what a great give-away!! crossing my fingers

Just another entry that I re-tweeted
Not sure if this counts but I also follow you on twitter.
In October I will be a new mother, luckily I do have a good collection of new moms who will support me in my new adventure. But, sadly, each one of them has had quite a few problems with breast feeding – some of which even resulted in giving up after a two weeks others who would literally cry in pain for several weeks when feeding. I am quite anxious about the changes in my life (giving up my University teaching position with no maternity pay for example) and would love to have one less thing to worry about! I am quite comfortable with infants, but obviously this is completely new territory for me. (Lack of organization throws me through a loop – you can imagine what this bundle of joy, sleepless nights, and hormones are going to do to me…) In addition, one of my best friends is due 1 week after me, along with 3 other friends following in the next month. So, I could certainly help share the news and dvd to all the other dazed eyed moms in my circle.
My BF is expecting and a little shy about BFING…I think watching this in the comfort of her own home instead of in a group would help her tremendously!!!

I would love to have this DVD. I’m in the process of becoming a midwife and also training through CAPPA to be a Certified Lactation Educator. It would be a great tool for me to use!
