I’m excited to announce that Breastfeeding Moms Unite! is expanding. Namely, I’ve recruited a Certified Lactation Counselor (formerly an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant ICBLC) to answer your breastfeeding questions. She will write the new weekly (or bi-monthly) “Ask an LC” column. I’m really grateful to Melissa Yetter, RN, CLC for agreeing to do this. She was the first person I asked and I was thrilled when she said yes. Melissa was by far my top pick.
Melissa is an experienced obstetrics, labour and delivery and newborn nurse since the 1970′s and has been a lactation consultant since the late 1980′s. She writes the blog Stork Stories…Birth & Breastfeeding about her experiences as a maternity nurse and lactation professional from the 1970′s to present. Melissa has a very warm, respectful approach that I greatly admire and her passion for birth and breastfeeding is palpable. I am honoured to have her on board.
She is available to answer your breastfeeding questions, so if you have any, please contact me via the contact tab at the top of this page or email me directly at bfingmomsunite AT gmail DOT com. Please note that while Melissa would love to be able to answer all questions, every mother-baby relationship is unique and some specific questions or situations are not easily answered unless the mother/baby are physically observed, examined or seen in person. Therefore, you will need to keep the questions general in nature.
I’m also broadening my repertiore to include other subjects on the blog. Breastfeeding Moms Unite! will always be primarily about breastfeeding and breastfeeding-related topics, but I’m going to write more often about other things too: my adventures in attatchment parenting, my ongoing journey towards living more sustainably, psychological and social topics close to my heart, and other things about me. I chose to blog my passion and blog for a cause, but I think it is important to get to know the person behind the cause too. So prepare to meet the other sides of me soon!
I hope you’ll like these upcoming changes. I’m open to feedback both positive and negative, so fire away as you see fit. And thanks for your support over these past eight months. It means so much to me!
I want to leave you with a poem. It’s about picking blueberries with my daughter. I haven’t written a poem in ages so you’ll see I’m not that great at it, but I wanted to capture some of what it was like nursing my daughter in the humidity of the blueberry bushes yesterday since I forgot my camera. I made the reference to Philedelphia because it is the only place I have experienced true humidity.
Warm and Mushy Blueberries
Each blade of grass is breathing hot little breaths.
My legs might as well be in Philedelphia
Where it is so damp and hot.
But Philly doesn’t have 5 acres of blueberries
though each branch hangs with humidity around my face.
I’m wearing a black shirt and I left my hat in the car.
The sun has found me.
Yet, it is so restful here.
I am blinded by green and blue all around me, yellow above.
The girls play hide and seek, chasing voices amongst the colours.
My daughter finds me in my quiet.
“I hot Mommy,” she says.
“Milkies.”
She feels muggy.
I wilt a little more as she settles on my lap.
She nurses, pink and white. I pick, peachy and blue.
We are warm and mushy,
Like the blueberries.

Congratulations! This is all really exciting stuff. You have such a great vibe hear and the expansion is only going to enhance your great content. I look forward to reading and following your journey.
peace, Hillary
I’m looking forward to reading more about your other topics and learning more about you and your journey! Congratulations on expanding. My blog started out about babies and natural parenting and now encompasses sustainable living, environmental concerns, education, and personal stories. It’s a natural progression, eh?
@Hillary – Thank you. I like that you like the vibe here. I try to create a positive energetic vibe as best I can so I’m glad you’ve caught the wave.
@PureMothers – That’s exactly where I am. It’s just time to move things forward and start encompassing my other interests and passions. I just want to be careful about keeping the integrity of the blog intact. I want it to still remain a breastfeeding blog. I think I can do that though. The title of the blog will keep me in line.
What a great addition to have to this blog! Welcome, Melissa!
I look forward to reading her column.
Hooray for expansion!
And I quite like the poem.
Good for you! I always enjoy reading your blog, even though sometimes I get backed up and have to go back a million posts! As a first time breastfeeding mother I have gotten some great tips from your site so far. I will enjoy reading more about you and your life as well.
