It’s Monday of World Breastfeeding Awareness Week. Monday’s are always good days to organize your week and make goals. Now that everyone knows what I wanted to do this week and what I am doing for World Breastfeeding Awareness Week instead, I thought it should be your turn to tell me what you are doing.
Below are a few ideas to get you started.
Things you can do to promote breastfeeding awareness
- Breastfeed your baby.
- Breastfeed in public.
- Blog about World Breastfeeding Awareness Week.
- Get yourself a “twibbon” if you are on Twitter to show your support for breastfeeeding.
- Join La Leche League or become a leader.
- Donate money to La Leche League or a milk bank.
- Donate breast milk to a milk bank.
- Donate your used breast pump to someone in need.
- Purchase some universal breastfeeding symbol stickers and go around to your local restaurants and other family-oriented establishments. Ask them if they would be willing to post the stickers on their window or door to let nursing moms know they are welcome. (I have one on the window by my front door so potential daycare clients and visitors know that my home is breastfeeding friendly. Anytime. Anywhere.)
- Write a letter to your local newspaper telling readers it is World Breastfeeding Awareness Week and suggest ways for your community to become more supportive of breastfeeding moms.
- Hold an event to promote breastfeeding awareness, whether on your own, with friends, or with your La Leche League group. You could raise money for your favorite breastfeeding charity at the same time. Hold a car wash, do a breastfeeding walk, have a bake sale, have a “nurse-out.”
- If you have a pregnant friend, buy her a Simply Breastfeeding DVD by My Baby Experts. This DVD is sure to increase her and her partner’s knowledge and commitment to breastfeed. You can buy it off my site by clicking the icon on the top right part of the page below the photo generator.
- Volunteer for your local Red Cross. You will come in handy in future emergencies, educating and supporting mothers about the importance of breastfeeding in the midst of tragedy. This year’s World Breastfeeding Awareness Week theme is Breastfeeding: Prepared For Life. It “recognizes the importance of supporting mothers with solid breastfeeding information so they can be successful at any time, especially in any emergency situation such as flooding, earthquakes or wild fires, or personal emergencies such as house fires, loss of a job, or public health emergencies like an epidemic.” (Source).

Hey, check out my blog to see what I’m doing this week!
hmm.. it’s actually going to be a busy month! 080409-there was a milk-letting at the Philippine General Hospital. since i was at work, my nanny went their to bring about 20 packs of my frozen milk (and I got a thank you card!). 080509 – i’m meeting with my BF org to discuss a project. 080809 – i’m attending a milk code forum. 081009 – dress up dinner with bf group to celebrate the month
0827-2809 – breastfeeding awareness festival at my government institution (which I organized with my co-employees) and finally 082909 – flying to my hometown to give a talk on breastfeeding and working
I participated in the Facebook virtual nurse-in. However, my baby pictures of DD were tucked in her room (we had a complicated relationship so yes – most bfing pictures of her are baby pictures), and then I lost Internet access (at Starbucks now, we are supposed to receive our new modem piece TOMORROW!), so my picture is, well, a bfing cow. Lol! Why not
I took it during our recent trip to Ireland this past month, while at the Cliff of Moher (do you like how Moher sounds like Mother? I know I do!). Of course I had to snap it!
Becoming a LLL Leader – I actually told my husband the other day that at some point in the future, when I’ve had more experience with bfing, I would lik eto do that
Intentions count too, right?
Annnnd I wanted to link that nurse-in: http://www.facebook.com/event......amp;ref=mf
I wrote a blog post for WBAW, even though I wasn’t expecting to. I’d love your thoughts if you have time. http://intentionalbirth.wordpr.....-big-deal/
@Johanne – I’m not on FB too much these days so I completely missed the nurse-in this week. I guess I still have time to join but it goes to show how much more time I’m spending on twitter and my blog. I used to use FB alot…. Anyway, thanks for letting me know about it!
@Karen – Great post. Everyone should read it!
@Kim – You’re awesome! That’s amazing how much money you have raised. Our LLL group is in dire need of funds too.
@Jenny – You are one busy woman. My hat is off to you and all the wonderful work you do for breastfeeding in the Phillipines.
