One word to cure it: ALCOHOL! I was diagnosed with Raynauds by a lactation specialist. My doctor didn't know much about Raynauds but decided I might have thrush, so I tried two different creams, with no avail. I suffered for 4 months through horrific throbbing pain that went all the way to my back and stopped me in my tracks sometimes until the pain subsided and kept the exhausted me from sleeping at night right after I fed her. After trying hot compresses (socks filled with rice and microwaved for exactly 22 seconds stuffed in my bra) and pretending that they worked, my mom reminded me that her friend has Raynauds in her fingers. There was only ONE thing that worked for her and it was wine. She was allowed to keep a bottle of wine in her desk at work! I thought I would give it a try and WHAT A MIRACLE!!! I'm not advocating alcoholism here, it literally took a 1/2 glass or sometimes I would put 1/2 shot of kahlua in my coffee in the morning and that's it. Not even enough to feel the effects of alcohol in my system, but just enough to take that horrific throbbing, shooting pain away from my breasts. Thankfully the pain has subsided and only happens occasionally now, so I rarely have to drink to take the pain away anymore. (Although I do miss my extra tasty coffee sometimes!). Try it and see if it works for you. Again, just a 1/2 a glass or 1/2 a shot should do it!

@Tara @Brenna @Joellen @Christina ~ Thanks so much for sharing... Didn't mean to be missing in action for so long.
I am sorry you all had to deal with similar issues. Glad you have all been able to overcome! Strong women..all of you!
Blanching and Vasospasm of the nipple can happen without Raynaud's phenomenon so for your future health and or future breastfeeding plans, it may be in your best interest to be diagnosed by a health professional if you feel this is what you have.
Ahhhh..... The tongue tie! Such controversy. For so many it causes big problems that dramatically improve with correction..for others, the degree of tongue tie may never interfere with feeding or speech. I have a historical perspective, professional views and personal opinion about that topic...which I will be blogging about eventually. Thank you @Tara.
@BFproblems... Glad you added Raynaud's info to your site!
Thanks Melodie ;-)

I also had Raynauds related problems while nursing, especially in the early days. A HUGE help for me was having my tongue tied baby's frenulum cut. All of a sudden his latch improved significantly and the Raynauds symptoms lessened significantly. I was really surprised to find so little information and help around the tongue tie issue - with a 3 day hospital stay and 2 very experienced midwives I would have expected such a common issue to be easily diagnosed. It took a la leche league leader who had experienced the same thing with her baby to help me out! I would definitely suggest having someone take a look underneath your baby's tongue if you think this may be an issue - it may help your Raynauds symptoms too!

@Brenna - I'm so glad you asked this question for Melissa. It has already been helpful to so many moms and it was a problem I too, like @BFproblems, didn't know anything about.

@Christina and @JoEllen _I'm so glad that you also found this relevant and helpful. It is such an honour for me to have Melissa on board here as a LC and to be able to reach more moms with a wider range of breastfeeding topics with the help of her expertise.

Keep the questions coming everyone!

Thank you so much for posting this!! I had the hardest time with my Raynaud's. It took a lot of time to figure it out and I think I was treated for thrush unnecessarily several times. We definitely had it once, but thought it kept recurring... I did not have this with my first two, just this time. It also made pumping incredibly painful and the skin so sensitive I developed infections several times. The medication was not good for me since my blood pressure is already so low.

I nearly gave up, but am proud to say we are still going at 13+ months. I just hope that others can get help from this information!

Thank you for sharing this!

I experienced blanching with the triphasic color change during the early weeks of breastfeeding my son. How I wish I would have had this information instead of gritting my teeth and bearing it for so long. Thankfully for me, it went away on its own around 6-7 weeks, at the same time I finally found out what vasospasms were and that my mother has Raynaud's!
