Today we spent the afternoon at the beach. Since I believe that every adventure is a learning opportunity, and since I don’t rely on our public school system to be the sole educator of my child, we did a little weekend “unschooling,” and this is what we learned:

We learned that some clams “walk” through the sand and leave little trails behind them.

We learned that we can see the legs of some shellfish and can watch them scuttle through the water.

We learned that seagulls can swallow their food in one gulp.

We learned that the water in tidal pools is warmer than in the ocean.

We also learned that it’s important to wear boots and rain pants if you want to get dirty making sand castles and getting stuck in the sand. Because even though the sun is shining, it’s still winter kids!

Mom learned that the “Rule of Thirds” does make a difference to taking a good photograph.

We learned that mom doesn’t know what these things are, but that they sure are cool!

We learned that on one of the mountains over there the Winter Olympics are taking place.

We learned that playing in cold, wet sand makes our hands red and hurt.

We learned that we can’t wake up at 6:00 am and then be expected to enjoy getting cold and wet for more than an hour just before dinner. (Here comes grumpy pants demanding to go home and eat!)

We learned that short family vacations are good for the soul. Even cold, wet and tired ones.
