The Woman Behind Wild Mother Arts

I always like to ask a few questions of my sponsors. Not only do I like to get to know them a little better but I think its good for readers to learn a bit about the people behind the business. Let me introduce Jacquie, the talent behind Wild Mother Arts. Wild Mother Arts specializes in fertility jewelry, jewelry for pregnant and breastfeeding moms and jewelry for the goddess inside all women.

What is something you would like people to know about you and/or Wild Mother Arts?

I’m a mama of three children (4, 8 & almost 13), a doula and a trained breastfeeding counsellor. I have a background in Early Childhood Education. I adore science fiction and happily consider myself a geek. I love to read and write both fiction and non-fiction. I am also a reiki master and practice the wise woman tradition of herbalism with my family. I’m thrilled by how well my jewelry has been received over the last eight months and in the new year I’ll be branching out with new jewelry, new products and a series of e-booklets, too.

What made you decide to start making jewelry for mothers?


I started making jewelry when I was pregnant with my daughter who is eight. I was looking for something to celebrate fertility and pregnancy and birth, but I couldn’t find anything out there so I decided to learn how to make my own. After lots of trips to the local bead shop, some books & lots of practice I made myself a necklace, bracelet and earrings. I received so many compliments on it that I starting making pieces for family and friends, and it naturally evolved as a small business.

How do you balance work and home life?


Balancing work and home life is an ever-changing, daily challenge! What works one day for us might not work the next, so I’m pretty flexible. I tend to work in short spurts with my dining room table as my work space, and in our house everything that is going on happens within a few feet of that table. It’s like our hearth – the heart and soul of our home. So everyone and everything is close by and I can do 5-10 minutes of creating or packing at a time and then play a game with the kids or go and make dinner. It’s not perfect and the table is always covered in beads, envelopes or the light tent but it works for us.
I also couldn’t do this without the help of my husband. When I get really busy with orders, creating or packing, he makes dinner, does the laundry and sometimes takes my packages to the post office. My children are also learning how to help too: the youngest picks up stray beads, my daughter gives great input on color combinations and my older son does a lot of chores around the house & helps take care of his siblings. He’s good at naming necklaces, too!
What do you love most about what you do?

Last week I had a mama tell me that the necklace that I had made for her was not only one of her favorite pieces of jewelry, but also one of the things she treasured most. Hearing that it was so meaningful to her really touched me! I love creating pieces that honour and celebrate the journey of women’s lives, and that many of them – like the nursing necklaces – are practical, too. I am so very grateful that I’ve found something that I love to do, that I can do from home and be with my family.

“Red jasper is one of my favorite stones for pregnancy, birth & nursing. The beautiful brick red stone often has black lines and tiny bits of white or clear quartz running through them. They are thought to encourage fertility, protect against miscarriage and harm during pregnancy, and make excellent worry stones. This necklace is made with a 40mm red jasper donut – just over an inch and a half in diameter.
Nursing necklaces are worn by mamas while breastfeeding to capture baby’s attention and to distract baby from pinching, tugging, or twiddling on mama. The donut-shaped stones are smooth and lend themselves to being fiddled with as well as being stylish and fun on their own. Necklaces are also wonderful for anyone who will be feeding baby while mama is away, and can also make for easier diaper changes, and are perfect for babywearing.
It’s dressed up with a Celtic-style, antique-silver pewter bead made in the US by Tierracast – a company which prides itself for producing beautifully detailed beads made from food-grade, lead-free pewter.
The tightly-woven cotton cord is tied carefully with knots including over top of the bead for safety, making the necklace strong and adjustable for when you’re nursing and want it to hang lower for baby. Then when you’re done, you can just adjust the knots for a shorter look.
Each Mama Nurse necklace comes in its own unbleached, cotton gift bag with the International Breastfeeding Symbol hand-stamped on it. These are the thicker muslin bags, with nice strong lace ties and make a great place to store your necklace when you’re not wearing it. You can just toss it in with your diaper bag and you’re good to go.”

    Do I have to pick just one thing I like?? There are so many, lol. I like the Gala Birthing Necklace, the Goodnight Moon Nursing and Storytelling Necklace, the Moon Mother Nursing Necklace Set, heck, all of the nursing necklaces are beautiful, many things on this site I am coveting.
